Prevent Equipment Downtime With a Simple Preventive Maintenance Checklist

4 min readSadat Transport & Contracting
Operator inspecting heavy equipment on site

On a busy Abu Dhabi site, an unplanned breakdown does more than stall one machine — it idles crews, pushes back milestones and eats into margins. The good news is that the vast majority of failures are predictable, and preventable, with a short routine carried out before and after every shift.

Preventive maintenance isn't about doing more work; it's about catching small issues before they become expensive ones. A loose hydraulic fitting found in a two-minute walkaround costs nothing to tighten. The same fitting found after it has drained a cylinder mid-lift can mean a full day of lost rental time and an emergency call-out.

The daily pre-start checklist

Before the engine turns over, every operator should run through the basics. None of these take long, and together they catch most field failures.

  • Fluid levels — engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and fuel checked and topped where needed.
  • Leaks — a quick scan under the machine for fresh oil, fuel or coolant pooling.
  • Tyres and tracks — pressure, wear and any embedded debris or cuts.
  • Greasing — pivot points and pins greased to the manufacturer's interval.
  • Lights, horn, mirrors and the reversing alarm all functioning.
  • Wear points — bucket teeth, cutting edges, wire ropes and slings inspected for damage.
A simple rule keeps machines healthy in the Gulf climate: heat and fine dust are the two biggest enemies of hydraulics. Clean filters and clean fluid extend component life dramatically.

Weekly and monthly tasks

Beyond the daily walkaround, schedule deeper checks: air and fuel filter condition, battery terminals, belt tension, and a closer look at hoses for cracking. Log engine hours against the service schedule so major servicing never slips.

Keep a written record

A maintenance log isn't bureaucracy — it's how you spot patterns. If the same hose fails twice, the log tells you it's a routing or specification problem, not bad luck. It also protects you on rental returns and resale, proving the machine was cared for.

When you rent from Sadat Transport, every unit arrives serviced and site-ready, and our team is on call to keep it that way — so your crew stays productive and your timeline stays intact.

How to Choose the Right Machine Size for Your Job Site

3 min readSadat Transport & Contracting
Heavy machinery working on a construction site

Bigger isn't always better. Hire a machine that's too large and you pay for capacity you'll never use — too small and you lose hours to extra passes and strained equipment. Matching the machine to the task is one of the easiest ways to control project cost.

Start with the work, not the machine

Define the job before you pick the equipment: What's the heaviest lift, the deepest dig, the longest reach? What's the daily volume you need to move? Those numbers — not gut feel — should drive the selection.

Three questions that size most jobs

  • Load & reach — for cranes, the critical figure is weight at radius. A 50-ton crane lifting at maximum reach has far less capacity than its headline rating suggests.
  • Site access — narrow gates, soft ground and overhead lines all cap the size you can realistically deploy. The biggest machine is useless if it can't reach the work.
  • Duration & volume — a short, high-intensity task may justify a larger unit; a long, steady one often suits a right-sized, fuel-efficient machine.
Rule of thumb: choose the smallest machine that comfortably handles your peak demand. It will be cheaper to hire, easier to position, and more economical to run.

Don't forget the ground

Ground bearing pressure matters as much as lift capacity. Tracked machines spread load better than wheeled ones on soft or made-up ground — a consideration that's easy to overlook until a machine sinks.

Unsure which unit fits your scope? Send us the lift weights, reach and site constraints and our team will recommend the right configuration from our Abu Dhabi fleet — from 25-to-250-ton mobile cranes to loaders, excavators and access platforms.

New Heavy Equipment Safety Standards Every Contractor Should Know

5 min readSadat Transport & Contracting
Construction workers in high-visibility gear on site

Site safety expectations keep rising, and for good reason. Beyond protecting people, a strong safety record protects your schedule, your reputation and your ability to win work. Here's what contractors operating heavy equipment should have firmly in place.

Certified, competent operators

Equipment is only as safe as the person controlling it. Every operator should hold valid certification for the specific machine class and understand its load charts, blind spots and shutdown procedures. Refresher training matters as much as the original ticket.

Lift planning and exclusion zones

  • Every non-routine lift should have a documented plan covering weight, radius, ground conditions and rigging.
  • Establish and enforce exclusion zones — no person under a suspended load, ever.
  • Use a trained banksman or signaller for blind lifts and confined movements.
  • Check wind limits before working at height with cranes and access platforms.
The most common serious incidents on equipment sites trace back to three causes: people in the swing or travel path, overloaded or poorly planned lifts, and unmaintained safety systems. All three are controllable.

Maintained safety systems

Reversing alarms, cameras, lights, beacons and load-moment indicators are safety-critical — not optional extras. They must be tested as part of the daily checklist and never bypassed. A disabled alarm is a reportable hazard.

PPE and site discipline

High-visibility clothing, hard hats and appropriate footwear remain the baseline, supported by clear pedestrian routes kept separate from machine movement wherever possible. Good housekeeping — clear ground, secured loads, tidy work areas — quietly prevents a large share of incidents.

At Sadat Transport, every unit we hire out is supplied with functioning safety systems and, where required, experienced operators who work to these standards as a matter of course. Safe sites keep projects moving.
